Back in 2014 the Kirkbymoorside History Group began to research the former veterans from the wars who served from Kirkbymoorside. When the old Church House building was leased out and renovated to become the Community Library, the history group stepped in to preserve the original Rolls of Honour which were uncovered in a storage cupboard. These Rolls have been re-framed, restored and now hang in the meeting rooms above the main library, for all to see.
At the same time, the history group also worked to ensure the black wrought iron seats in the town and on the hills above it, were remembered as the war memorials they were intended and had the names of those who died in service of their country added to the seats.
Several years later, through the local auction room, the history group was also able to re-acquire a large, framed set of WWI photographs taken and donated by one of Kirkbymoorside’s tank veterans – Captain Frank of Low Hall. Originally it had hung in the Kirkbymoorside branch of the British Legion Club on Shaw Drive, then it was moved to Pickering branch before being sold off. The mount surrounding the photographs has been decorated with delicate watercolours of battlefield scenes, including biplanes and armoured vehicles.
