The Big House On the Hill – Due out May 2023: A concise history of the
Kirkbymoorside Workhouse built on Gillamoor Road. Using the census returns taken
every 10 years from 1841 and many original documents, we have seen how the
inmates were cared for and how the Workhouse was well-integrated into the close
local community. We have followed some lives over decades and seen successes and
failures, including the Master’s sweet pea growing and the Matron’s therapeutic use of
her frying pan!

Come along to our book launch at the Moorside Room on Wednesday 3 May between 9 – 4 pm to meet Jenny & Judy and get hold of a copy of the new book. There will be information and displays too.

If you can’t make this date, then pop along to the Library to see the display there which will be upstairs on Friday 12 May (11-5) and again Saturday 13 May (9.30 – 12).

“Knock Off, Make Up!” – Due out May 2023: Discover the origins of
Kirkbymoorside’s Fire Brigade, beginning with the Tollbooth Fire of 1871 right
through the war years to modern day. Written by retired fireman Chris Boddy, you
will hear first hand some of the funny events and tragedies the brigade has had to deal
with.
